Building on Legacy: How Habitat Became Part of My Journey

Anelese Whitton, Executive Director

When I reflect on my journey with Habitat for Humanity of Grant County, it's clear to me that this work is about so much more than hammers, nails, and blueprints. It's about building stability, hope, and a sense of community. I feel honored to share my journey in this work with you.

My connection to Habitat for Humanity began long before I knew the impact it would have on my life. My grandpa was one of the founding members of HFH of Grant County. I grew up hearing his stories of the early days - how a group of dedicated individuals came together, determined to help families achieve the dream of homeownership.

My grandpa believed in the power of giving people a "hand-up, not a hand-out", and his commitment to Habitat instilled in me a deep respect for this mission. As a child, I didn't fully understand the significance of what my grandpa was part of, but his legacy shaped me more than I realized. I always new about Habitat and the incredible work being done in our community, but it wasn't until just a few years ago that I truly saw it's impact firsthand.

It is a basic truth: everyone, everywhere longs for a safe and stable place to call home. Whether you're in Grant County, a neighboring community, or across the globe, homeownership is a universal dream - something that unites us all. A home is more than four walls and a roof; it's a place of comfort, belonging, and a sense of security. It is where memories are made, where dreams are nurtured, and where families thrive.

My journey with HFH of Grant County began in June of 2021 as the Program Coordinator. Within this role I had little experience but plenty of heart. I watched families, neighbors, volunteers, and community partners come together to achieve one common goal. I saw families beam with pride as they picked up tools, determined to contribute sweat equity toward their own homes. These experiences sparked something in me - a sense of purpose that has never left.

Now, as the Executive Director, I get to witness firsthand the difference we make in people's lives. I have seen children who finally have a safe place to study and play, parents who can dream of brighter futures without the burden of unsafe or unstable housing, and volunteers who discover the joy of giving back. These stories are what motivate my passion for this work.

Habitat for Humanity has also taught me about partnership - the importance of working together to achieve something greater than ourselves. Whether it's the families we serve, our volunteers, or our generous supporters, each person plays a role in making this work possible. Together, we aren't just building homes - we are building a community where everyone has a chance to thrive.

As I continue this journey, I carry with me the lessons I've learned: that everyone deserves a safe and decent place to live; that hope can be found in the smallest acts of kindness; and that when we all come together, we can accomplish incredible things.

I also carry my grandpa's legacy with me. Every home we build, every family we partner with, and every community we strengthen feels like an extension of the vision he and the other founders shared. I'm proud to continue the work they started over 20 years ago.

Thank you for being part of this mission. Whether you have volunteered, donated, or shared our story, you are helping us build homes, community, and hope.

If you have ever wondered what Habitat is about, I encourage you to join us on a build site, meet the families we work with, or come see how your support makes a lasting impact. My journey with Habitat for Humanity of Grant County started with one small step and today, I continue to take steps to build a world where everyone has a place to call home.

Together, we can change lives.
